The first day of Glastonbury was held on the 19th September 1970 with an attendance figure peaked at ~1,500. The original entry fee in 1970 was £1 but included free milk from the farm. Amongst the acts to play were Marc Bolan, Keith Christmas, Stackridge, Al Stewart and Quintessence.
The following years festival was the first to feature the pyramid stage which was constructed out of scaffolding and expanded metal covered with plastic sheeting. Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie, Joan Baez, Fairport Convention and Quintessence were all among the acts this year. With free entry the attended soared to ~12,000.
2005 still holds the record official attendance with ~ 153,000. The acts included White Stripes, Coldplay, Razorlight, New Order, Brian Wilson, James Blunt, The Killers, K.T Tunstall, Kaiser Chiefs, The La’s & Elvis Costello. The price was £125.
