Musicians’ Union

They provide support for employed and self-employed musicians working in every area of the UK music industry, (including music education).

The musicians’ union acts to maximise the employment and overall income of musicians as well as protecting and improving working conditions. They also offer legal support and assistance to all musicians based on their specific needs.

Also, they actively oppose all forms of harassment, prejudice and unfair discrimination whether on the grounds of sex, race, ethnic or national origin, religion, colour, class, caring responsibilities, marital status, sexuality, disability, age, or other status or personal characteristic.

MCPS

The MCPS (Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society) collects and pays royalties for musicians whenever their music is copied as a physical product, streamed/download from a service or used on tv/radio.

PRS

The PRS (Performing Right Society) collects and pays royalties for musicians whenever their music is broadcast on TV/ Radio, performed or played in public, whether live or through a recording & streamed or downloaded. In some cases, money is collected jointly then split between the MCPS and PRS.

PLI

PLI is also known as Public Liability Insurance covers you if a client or member of the public claims they have been injured, or their property damaged, because of your business activities.

History of Glastonbury Festival

The first day of Glastonbury was held on the 19th September 1970 with an attendance figure peaked at ~1,500. The original entry fee in 1970 was £1 but included free milk from the farm. Amongst the acts to play were Marc Bolan, Keith Christmas, Stackridge, Al Stewart and Quintessence.

The following years festival was the first to feature the pyramid stage which was constructed out of scaffolding and expanded metal covered with plastic sheeting. Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie, Joan Baez, Fairport Convention and Quintessence were all among the acts this year. With free entry the attended soared to ~12,000.

2005 still holds the record official attendance with ~ 153,000. The acts included White Stripes, Coldplay, Razorlight, New Order, Brian Wilson, James Blunt, The Killers, K.T Tunstall,  Kaiser Chiefs, The La’s & Elvis Costello. The price was £125.
